The science of the production, propagation, and perception of sound. This term includes all aspects of the study of sound and hearing and can be used to refer to two specific senses, that of room acoustics in reference to the performance of music and that of sound-source acoustics as in the specific acoustical properties of the various classes of instruments and the voice (New Harvard Dictionary of Music and New Grove Dictionary of Music & Musicians 1st ed.)
