Analytical method employed by Carl Dahlhaus in his book Ludwig van Beethoven und seine Zeit and other publications. "Appealing to a hermeneutic tradition reaching back to E.T.A. Hoffmann, [Dahlhaus] insists on the necessity of relating technical analysis and aesthetic interpretation, a combination he then further inflects by his characteristic historiographical meditations. For example...he asserts that analysis should always aim at 'reconstruction of the question to which the work represents the answer.' He also problematizes the assumption of Zeitgeist-like relations between musical works and historical events, often tacitly employing the more sophisticated notion of the 'non-contemporaneity of the contemporaneous' (Ungleichzeitigkeit des Gleichzeitigen)."
