No unitary definition of this term exists at this time. In popuular usage, the term is used to mean a general "critical discussion." However, scholars use the term to refer to: (1) a body of work associated with Jacques Derrida in the late 1960s; (2) a more generalized practice seen in the work of P. DeMan, G. Hartmann, J. Hillis Miller, and B. Johnson. "Some commentators identify deconstruction with a generalized textuality, while others associate at least some deconstructive work with a tradition of (among other things) social philosophy and criticism. Some have invoked deconstruction more generally as a metonymic reference to the inherent instability of systems of signification, or privileged sites of meaning." (Adam Krims, "Disciplining Deconstruction (for Music Analysis)," 19th-Century Music 21 (1998): 297-298.
