A type of eighteenth-century social song set to strophic poetry composed for both solos and ensembles (often with choral refrain). The songs usually had a simple keyboard accompaniment, in a musical style appropriate for performance by amateurs, with simple phrase structure and harmonies and syllabic declamation. Both Schiller and Goethe wrote poems intended for this type of musical setting (cf. F.E. Kirby, "Beethoven and the 'Geselliges Lied'").
