Group of composers at the court of the Elector Palatine in Mannheim, under the patronage of Duke Carl Theodor (1724-1799). The school may be divided into two groups: the older generation or founders (Johann Stamitz, F.X. Richter, Ignaz Holzbauer, followed by Anton Filtz and Giuseppe Toeschi) and the younger branch (C.Cannabich, F. Beck, E. Eichner, I.Frankl). There was also a group that flourished after the school had outlived its excellence (Karl Stamitz, Wilhelm Cramer, Anton Stamitz, and Carl Cannabich) continuing the traditions in the face of the complete triumph of the Viennese classical style. [Paraphrased from Lang, Music in Western Civilization]
