The capacity of musical events to convey or evoke literary or dramatic structures, paradigms, action sequences, or event designs (c.f. Carolyn Abbate, Unsung Voices, chapter 1). These discussions often utilize literary-theoretical or semiotic theories of narrative. Includes discussions of explicit musical "storytelling," general plot archetypes, and explorations of the relationship between music and narrative interpretations supplied by listeners. Use "Program music" for discussions explicitly framed as such.
