A performing convention that renders divisions of the beat in alternating long and short values, even if written in equal values, to add grace and liveliness to the music. It is documented in over 85 French treatises from 1550 to ca. 1810, the great majority and the most detailed dating from 1690-1780 (New Harvard Dictionary of Music)
