From the late 18th century to the present, a standard movement-type introduced as a replacement for the minuet in multimovement cycles. Scherzos are normally in rapid 3/4 time; they range in character from the light and playful to the sinister and macabre. Most scherzos are in rounded binary form. As in the minuet, there is usually a contrasting trio, after which the scherzo is restated (New Harvard Dictionary of Music)
