Abbreviation of Italian phrase "soggetto cavato dalle parole," a "subject carved from the words." Normally such subjects are "derived from a text by employing solmization syllables whose vowels correspond to the vowels in the text" (New Harvard). Subjects may also be created from the letters of a name.
