The "grand style" of instrumental music articulated by J.A.P Schulz in Sulzer's Allgemeine Theorie der schonen Kunste (1794). According to Schulz, "the symphony is pre-eminently suited to the expression of things grand, solemn, and sublime" The concept developed from 18th-century aesthetic ideals. The term is defined differently by various authors and sometimes overlaps with "monumental style"
